In this commissioned self-portrait, Magritte, who always had a soft spot for Surrealism, mixes paradoxical objects together, creating a symbol to the tempted human desire to see what’s hidden behind the visible - seriously, why can’t we see the man’s face already?

Although subject to heated religious interpretations and social criticism, the painting portrays our internal conflict and curiosity between the seen and unseen, and our own relationship with the so-called “forbidden fruit”.
