Known for being Michelangelo’s teacher and for his talent to represent religious narratives and portraits, Domenico Ghirlandaio, left a vast eclectic legacy crossing Florentine, Flemish and Classical art elements among his works.

Ghirlandaio’s representations of women, like Botticelli, are subjected to an aesthetic compromise that favors idealistic stylization, aiming to “create the real” as seen in this panel. The artist portrays a young woman dressed in Florentine fashion and adorned with a coral necklace, and he harmoniously balances forms with strong yet delicate colors in front of a solid background instead of the well-known landscape which caught our attention.

He is now regarded as one of the most eloquent and elegant Renaissance artists at the end of the 15th century.
